About GlowGarret

GlowGarret started in a garage in 2021, wrapped in a tangle of LED strips, a soldering iron, and a serious case of buyer's remorse. That's the honest version of our founding story, and we've never seen a reason to dress it up.

How It Started

Our founder, Mara Ellison, spent a decade working as a lighting technician for theater productions before moving into residential smart home consulting. She kept buying ambient lighting kits for clients that looked incredible in marketing photos and fell apart within months — dim diodes, laggy apps, adhesive backing that gave up after one humid summer. After the fourth return shipment in a single year, she started keeping a spreadsheet. That spreadsheet, shared with a few frustrated friends in home automation forums, became the seed of GlowGarret.

What began as personal notes turned into full teardown reviews, then a small team, then a site. Today GlowGarret is run by a compact crew of four: two lighting-and-electronics testers, one smart-home integration specialist, and one editor who insists every claim be checked twice before it goes live.

What We Cover

We focus specifically on LED strips, smart bulbs, ambient panels, backlighting kits, and the hubs and apps that control them. We don't try to cover every category of home goods — staying narrow lets us go deep, comparing color accuracy, sync latency, app stability, and long-term durability instead of skimming the surface.

How We Review

Every product featured on GlowGarret is either purchased with our own funds or, when supplied by a manufacturer for review, disclosed clearly at the top of the article and tested with the same rigor as anything we bought ourselves. We do not accept payment in exchange for a positive review, and we do not let advertisers preview or edit our conclusions.

• Unboxing and setup: we time and document the actual installation process, including app pairing and firmware updates, because setup friction is where most lighting products lose people.
• Color and brightness testing: we use a colorimeter to measure actual color temperature, CRI, and lumen output rather than relying on box claims.
• Software and sync testing: we run each product's app for a minimum of two weeks, checking for lag, crashes, and how well music or screen sync features actually track in real time.
• Durability checks: strips and panels are left running in varied conditions — direct sun exposure, humid bathrooms, tucked behind TVs — for at least 30 days before we finalize a verdict.
• Value comparison: we weigh price against feature set and competitor pricing, because the best product in a category isn't always the right recommendation for every budget.
